Moving Tips

6-8 Weeks before moving:
  • Find a mover or reserve a rental truck.
  • Begin gathering packing materials including boxes, marking pen, newspaper, packing tape (a dispenser is great) and scissors.
  • Reduce your baggage - Start going through your closets and cabinets and give your unwanted items to charity, have a garage sale or even throw old things away.
  • Contact the local Chamber of Commerce in your new community to learn about the schools, community programs, and local parks and recreational areas.
  • If you are traveling a long distance to your new home, make travel arrangements at this time. Keep your plans flexible if possible as there are inevitably changes or delays.
One month before moving:
  • Fill out change of address form at post office or on-line at www.usps.com.
  • Begin packing. Be sure to label your boxes with their contents and the room you want them delivered to in your new home. Determine which items you might want to move yourself and mark them accordingly.
  • If you are moving a long distance, be sure to collect medical, dental and school records from your current place of residence.
  • Transfer over your medical, property, fire and auto insurance to the new location.
  • Arrange for transportation for your pets.
One to Two weeks before moving:
  • Switch your utility services. Contact electricity, water, sewer, gas, trash, home security, telephone and cable. Set up disconnections to be done the day after you move out and connections, the day before the move in, if possible.
  • Keep packing.
  • Confirm the movers or truck rental company.
  • Confirm the travel arrangements for you and your family.
  • Return library books.
  • Pick up dry cleaning.
  • Clear out safe deposit boxes at the bank.
The day before moving:
  • Check your closets, cabinets, drawers, shelves and attic to be sure they are empty.
  • Clean out your refrigerator.
  • Pack the last things except the absolute necessities for the last night in your current home. Mark them appropriately.
On Moving day:
  • Pack remaining items in easy to get to areas as these are probably the first things you will need when you arrive at your new home.
  • Review with movers the locations names of the rooms in your new home to match how you labeled the boxes.
  • Pack a box with things you will need right away like disposable paper goods, cleaning supplies, snacks, trash bags, sheets and bathroom items.
  • Make a final tour of your home to be sure nothing is overlooked.
At your new home:
  • Renew your driveršs license with your new information. Also update your auto registration and tags if necessary.
